On this very day in 1956, South African women of all races came together to march in protest of the pass laws on the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The significance of this movement has been commemorated yearly.
Almost 65 years on, it has evolved into a celebration of women; for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
Here are some of the spectacular personalities that make up Luno:
Akhona: Customer Success Associate
Akhona is an agent of positive change who is passionate about Youth Development; so much so, that she founded a social enterprise that uses crowdfunding as a tool for enforcing Youth Development initiatives (to build on tech and psychosocial skills).
She holds a Bachelor degree in social work and an Honours degree in development studies from the University of Cape Town. She is also the Secretary General of Maximum Output Foundation.
Beyond that, Akhona also runs a weekly computer literacy course for high schoolers. Akhona has received international recognition for her work. She was selected to attend the One Young World Summit in The Hague.
Diné: Software Engineer
Diné's lifelong creativity and sense of logic led her to build her first website age 12. Since then she has honed her skills as a software engineer, working across various industries.
Diné studied a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering and a Master of Commerce degree in information systems from the University of Cape Town.
Diné joined Luno geared with a strong interest in building a financial product that people love to use.
As a woman in tech, there hasn’t always been a strong gender ratio. She's excited to see the tech industry growing more supportive of women and believes the way forward is through mutual support and encouragement.
Lucy: General Counsel for Legal
Lucy grew up in the South Island of New Zealand. She first started in the field of science, before realising law was better suited to her strengths and interests. She decided to switch paths and scored a scholarship to complete a Masters of Laws at the University of Cambridge.
When she’s not busy building Luno’s legal function, Lucy is pursuing her love of sports. She’s an avid (and super talented) cyclist. Earlier this year she finished top 10 in Cape Argus, with a time of 2:11:53. As a non-professional athlete and a full time employee, this is an incredible feat.
“The Luno team is full of incredibly talented women (and men!). We are all from very different backgrounds, and do very different things, but everyone is driven to achieve the same goal, which makes for an exceptional working environment.” - Lucy
Kimisha: Compliance Analyst
Kim is a Law graduate from the University of the Western Cape and has a passion for providing effective client service, always aiming to exceed expectations. She has gained a wealth of experience within Compliance, having spent substantial time focusing on Anti-Money Laundering at Barclays.
As a Bitcoin enthusiast, Kim is excited about frictionless money and her part in pioneering a better financial system. She believes diversity is essential for developing insights and solving problems.
Beyond that, Kim also has a strong interest in helping people realise their life-goals. She’s a firm believer that providing motivational and emotional support to others will help bring out the best version of themselves; paving greater opportunities for humanity
Robyn: Data Science Associate
