I'm a foreign resident, not a local citizen, can I still open a Luno account?

If you are a citizen of our supported countries with a bank account in that country, it is simple to upgrade your Luno account. See: How do I verify my identity?

If you are a foreign resident in of one of our supported countries, you can still upgrade your Luno account, but there are different requirements, see below.

You can upgrade your account securely using the Android or iOS Luno Smart Wallet, or by visiting the SETTINGS page on web. To verify your identity, submit the documents applicable to the country in which you currently stay.


South Africa

Proof of Identity

Valid passport

Proof of residency

Valid government-issued residence permit/visa, which should be one of the following types:

  • Business or

  • Permanent or

  • Refugee or

  • Spousal or

  • Study or

  • Work

 

Proof of bank account and proof of residential address

Proof of the local bank account, which you opened with your passport**


Nigeria / Indonesia / Malaysia

Proof of Identity

Valid passport

Proof of residency

Valid government-issued residence permit/visa, which should be one of the following types:

  • Business or

  • Permanent or

  • Refugee or

  • Spousal or

  • Study or

  • Work

Proof of bank account and proof of residential address

An acceptable proof of residential address document


Singapore

Proof of Identity and residency

Valid Singaporean S-pass or government-issued work permit

Proof of bank account and proof of residential address

An acceptable proof of residential address document


Europe

Proof of Identity

Valid non-EU passport and a selfie of yourself holding your passport

Proof of residency

Valid government-issued residence permit/visa, which should be one of the following types:

  • Business or

  • Permanent or

  • Refugee or

  • Spousal or

  • Study or

  • Work

 

Proof of bank account and proof of residential address

Proof of the local bank account, which you opened with your passport**


**This should be a recent bank statement that clearly indicates your name, account number and residential address. We can only verify information when the name and passport number that you submitted to us are the same as the name and passport number used to open your local bank account. If you opened your bank account with a different identity document from the one you submitted as proof of identity, please also submit the identity document you used to open the bank account.

If your bank statement does not show your residential address, you also need to submit a separate proof of residential address document.

Alternatively, you can request and submit a stamped letter from your local bank which clearly states your name, passport number, residential address and bank account number.
