Sonic (S), the successor to Fantom (FTM), is a high performance layer 1 blockchain. Its mainnet launched in December 2024 and, in early 2025, the Fantom token (FTM) was upgraded to the new S token at a one to one ratio. Sonic is compatible with Ethereum smart contracts and is built for speed, with transactions confirming in under a second and the capacity to process thousands per second. It is associated with Andre Cronje, one of the architects of the Fantom ecosystem. Developers can earn a share of the fees their applications generate through a fee monetisation programme. S is used to pay fees, to stake and to take part in network governance.
