What is gas?

Gas is the fee required to carry out a transaction or run a smart contract on certain blockchains, most notably Ethereum. It compensates the validators who process and secure the work.

How fees change

Gas prices rise and fall with demand, so a busy network can mean higher fees. Fees are often quoted in gwei, a small unit of ether, and can change from minute to minute.
