What is a consensus mechanism?

A consensus mechanism is the process that lets computers in a blockchain network agree on the state of the ledger without a central authority. It decides which transactions are valid and in what order.

Common types

Proof of Work and Proof of Stake are the two most common. Both are designed to make cheating expensive, so that honest participation is the most rewarding choice.
