What is gwei?

Gwei is a small denomination of ether, the asset used on the Ethereum network. One ether is made up of a billion gwei.

Why it is used

Gas fees are commonly quoted in gwei because expressing them in full ether would mean very small, awkward numbers. Thinking in gwei makes everyday fees easier to read.
