What is immutability?

Immutability means that once data is recorded on a blockchain and confirmed, it is extremely difficult to alter or remove. Each block links to the one before it, so changing old data would break the chain.

Why it matters

This makes blockchain records reliable and auditable, since the history can be trusted by everyone. It also means mistakes, such as sending to the wrong address, usually cannot be undone.

Related terms

The ability of different blockchains to work together.

A network built on top of a blockchain to make transactions faster and cheaper.
