What is a ledger?

A ledger is a record of transactions. In traditional finance a bank keeps its own ledger, whereas a blockchain is a ledger shared across many computers at once.

Why the shared version matters

Because a blockchain ledger is distributed, no single party holds the only copy, which makes the record transparent and hard to tamper with. The word also appears in the name of a well known hardware wallet brand.
