What is a Merkle tree?

A Merkle tree is a way of organising data using hashes so that large sets can be checked quickly and efficiently. Pairs of records are hashed together, again and again, up to a single top hash.

Why it matters

Blockchains use Merkle trees to confirm that a transaction belongs in a block without needing to download every transaction. This keeps verification fast even as data grows.
