What is a pump and dump?

A pump and dump is a scheme where a price is pushed up through hype or coordinated buying, then sold off quickly by those who started it. Latecomers are often left holding losses.

Why it matters

These schemes are considered market manipulation and are illegal in regulated markets. Sudden, heavily promoted price spikes with little real substance are a common warning sign.
