Optimism (OP) is the governance token of Optimism, a layer 2 network that makes Ethereum faster and cheaper to use. It uses optimistic rollups to process transactions off the main Ethereum chain and settle them back on it. Optimism developed the OP Stack, an open source framework used by other networks, including Base, to build their own chains, which together form a group of connected chains known as the Superchain. The OP token launched in 2022 and is used for governance, giving holders a vote on how the Optimism Collective funds public goods and upgrades the network.
