What is an oracle?

An oracle is a service that brings outside data onto a blockchain so smart contracts can use it. Contracts cannot reach the wider internet by themselves, so they depend on oracles for real-world information.

Why it matters

A price oracle, for example, tells a DeFi application the current value of an asset. Because contracts act on this data automatically, the reliability of an oracle is critical.
